Gum Contouring Can Eliminate Excess Gum Tissue for a Dramatic Transformation

Dr. Jin Ha Joung is a detail-oriented dentist who uses advanced gum contouring techniques at our Ridgewood, NJ, office to achieve optimal results. Also known as a gingivectomy, a gum contouring procedure reshapes the gum tissue around the teeth to create a more balanced smile. This procedure is primarily performed for cosmetic purposes to help patients achieve a smile they can feel confident about.

Using precise tools and techniques, our team can create a more symmetrical, scalloped gum line.

Uses of Gum Contouring

Gum contouring is frequently used for one of two purposes. One of the most common is to trim excess gum tissue that creates the appearance of a “gummy” smile. Excess gum tissue can make the teeth appear disproportionately small. By removing this excess tissue, Dr. Joung can create a more proportionate and natural-looking smile. Another use of gum contouring is to create a more even gum line because uneven gum tissue can make teeth appear crooked or misshapen. Using precise tools and techniques, the doctor can create a more symmetrical, scalloped gum line. Gum reshaping is also sometimes used in conjunction with other procedures, such as the placement of a dental crown, or in combination with other cosmetic procedures.

Procedure Outline

Gum contouring is a relatively quick procedure, which Dr. Joung can perform in just one office visit to our office. First, he will use a special pen to carefully mark your gums to outline your new gum line. When you are ready, we can administer appropriate anesthesia to maintain your comfort. Using advanced methods and instruments, he will then carefully remove small amounts of tissue to reshape the gum line.

You may experience some swelling and sensitivity in the gums for up to a week after your procedure. It is important to continue to brush and floss during this time, but to do so gently to avoid irritation. You should also avoid eating spicy foods or foods with seeds. Eating soft foods and taking over-the-counter pain medications can help alleviate any discomfort.
