What is TMJ Disorder?

TMD or temporomandibular disorder occurs due to problems with the hinge joint (the temporomandibular joint) that connects the lower jaw to the temporal bone in the skull. The cause of TMD is unclear, although experts have discovered links between jaw-muscle and jaw-joint problems and the disorder. Injury or trauma can also cause symptoms of TMD. If you're experiencing any of the following, we suggest you contact Ridgewood Dental Associates' TMJ specialists in Bergen County:

  • Clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • Dislocation of the jaw
  • Pain or tenderness in the face, jaw, neck, or shoulders
  • Pain in the ear while chewing, speaking, or opening the mouth wide
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw
  • Stuck or locked jaw joints
  • Swelling on either side of the face
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Discomfort when biting down

Because each of our patients experiences different degrees of TMD and various symptoms, a comprehensive consultation with one of our dentists will help determine whether or not you're suffering from TMD.

Treatment Options

Because the severity of TMD varies from person to person, so too do the treatments for the condition vary, based on the patient's needs. The available treatments range from simple to complex. More conservative TMD treatments include:

  • Application of hot and/or cold packs
  • Consumption of softer foods
  • Prescriptions for anti-inflammatory and pain medications
  • Relaxation techniques

Some of the more intensive TMD treatments are:

  • Trigger-point injections
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Arthroscopy
  • Open-joint surgery

Because Ridgewood Dental Associates was one of the first practices in the Bergen County area to employ TMJ specialists, our focus, as well as our ability, on rehabilitating our patients' jaw function and oral health is nearly unrivaled. As with each of our services, TMD treatments begin with an extensive, 1-on-1 consultation with your doctor. This appointment gives you a chance to be informed about TMD, ask questions, and address concerns. Your doctor will educate you about the procedures that will work best for you and prepare you to undergo the procedure. Ridgewood Dental Associates provides excellent dental care for life, so even after your TMD treatment, you will continue to visit us for checkups and routine cleanings to ensure the health of your jawbone, teeth, and gums.
