Implant-Supported Crowns

Treatment for an implant-supported crown is more complex than a traditional crown since we are also replacing the missing tooth root with a dental implant. However, an implant-supported crown offers many advantages that traditional dental bridges cannot. By restoring the underlying tooth root, a dental implant can prevent gum recession, bone loss, and other oral conditions. Furthermore, the implant provides incredible stability and should feel just like a natural tooth. Patients from Bergen County, NJ, and beyond can ask about implant-supported crowns at their next appointment to find out if they qualify for this revolutionary treatment.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over a damaged tooth to improve its strength and appearance. Ridgewood Dental Associates serves patients from Ridgewood and throughout Bergen County, NJ, with traditional crowns and implant-supported crowns. Implant-supported restorations completely restore a tooth all the way down to the roots.

Crowns Are Used for Many Purposes

Dental crowns are used in both cosmetic and restorative dentistry to help our patients:

  • Restore a dental implant to replace a lost tooth

  • Restore a broken, fractured, or decayed tooth

  • Protect a tooth after a root canal procedure

  • Replace a failing dental filling

  • Correct discoloration, chips, and aesthetic flaws

  • Support a dental bridge

Customizing Your Crown

Recent advancements in materials and placement techniques have made dental crowns stronger and more natural-looking than ever before. Ridgewood Dental Associates crafts all our crowns from the highest quality materials including IPS e.max®, zirconia, porcelain, and gold. Some materials like porcelain are incredibly life-like, mimicking the translucency and shine of a natural tooth. Other types, such as zirconia and porcelain fused to gold crowns, provide additional strength and are great for restoring molars. During your consultation, we will go over your options and help you select the best dental crown for your smile.

Advantages of Prompt Dental Crown Treatment

Relieve Discomfort

Dental crown treatment should eliminate the painful side effects of a damaged tooth including swollen gums, oral sensitivity, and pain when you eat and drink. Once you take care of infection and decay, you can get back to enjoying life with a healthy smile.

Avoid Costly Procedures

If you don't treat tooth decay, the infection can spread and lead to even more serious oral health conditions. A dental crown can correct the problem while it's still manageable, so you can avoid complicated and expensive restorative work.

Save Your Tooth

Treatment will not only save you money in the long run but can also save your natural tooth. A crown encases your tooth in a protective shell, preventing future damage and restoring strength and function to your smile.

How Do I Know If I Need a Crown?

There are some common symptoms that indicate you may need a dental crown. If you notice your tooth has become discolored, sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, or inflamed at the gums, chances are you have a problem that needs professional attention.

However, some patients do not display any apparent side effects and have tooth damage without even knowing it. The best way to find out if you need restorative dentistry is to get checked out by the dentist as soon as possible.

Timeline for a Traditional Dental Crown

Placing a dental crown usually requires two office visits at our Ridgewood, NJ, practice. Here is what you can expect during your treatment...

We craft all our crowns from the highest quality materials including IPS e.max, zirconia, porcelain, and gold.
We craft all our crowns from the highest quality materials including IPS e.max, zirconia, porcelain, and gold.

Tooth Prep

During the first appointment, your dentist will remove the portions of the tooth that are compromised. This may involve a root canal that cleans out bacteria and debris from the tooth's inner chamber. The remaining structure is then reshaped to accommodate your permanent crown.

Design

Next, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth to design your custom-fitting crown. The designs are sent off to our partner dental lab where specially trained technicians hand-craft the restoration. The technicians carefully manufacture the crown to fit the dimensions of your tooth and precisely match the zirconia, porcelain, or other material to the shade of your enamel.

Temporary Crown

It takes about two weeks on average for a permanent crown to be made. However, we can expedite your order to get your crown back in as little as three days. In the meantime, we will place a temporary crown over your tooth for protection.

Permanent Crown

When the crown is complete, we will have you back to the office for placement. First, we remove the temporary crown and clean your teeth. After checking to ensure the permanent crown looks natural and fits well, we bond it in place with dental cement. Once you are satisfied, your treatment is complete.

How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

Your permanent dental crown is custom-made to fit snugly around your tooth and should last for 10 years, if not longer. These restorations are remarkably durable and should be cared for similarly to your natural teeth. However, it is important to note that your temporary crown is not as strong so avoid especially hard or sticky foods until your permanent restoration is in place.

I deeply appreciate Dr. Jeong’s care and his outstanding professional dental skills. My case has been extremely challenging, and although I visited many dentists including professors at university dental hospitals, no one was able to fix it. But Dr. Jeong never gave up on me. He took the time to think through my case with me, did his absolute best, and provided thoughtful, precise treatment.
