Periodontics

Gum disease and jawbone atrophy can cause your teeth to become loose and eventually fall out.

The field of periodontics aims to maintain the gums and jawbone so they can effectively support the teeth.

Ridgewood Dental Associates serving Ridgewood, NJ, can help you care for your oral health and treat problems when they arise.

What Periodontics Can Treat

Periodontal care is focused on identifying and treating diseases that affect the gums and other tissues that support the teeth. By focusing on prevention and early treatment, you can eliminate the need for extensive dental care in the future.

Ridgewood Dental can help patients correct a variety of periodontal issues, including:

bleeding gums

Gum Disease

Gum Recession

Gum Recession

Losing gum tissue can lead to loose teeth and an increased risk of infections. Our Ridgewood, NJ, periodontist can restore your gumline with grafting.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis

Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria builds up above and below the gumline. In its earliest stages, the condition is known as gingivitis, causing symptoms like red, tender gums and bad breath. Fortunately, gingivitis can usually be reversed with a professional cleaning from a dentist and a good at-home dental care routine that includes brushing and flossing.

Advanced Periodontitis

When left untreated, gingivitis progresses into advanced periodontitis, which causes serious damage to the tissues that hold teeth in place. If you have advanced periodontitis, symptoms can include deep periodontal pockets, chronic bad breath, and loose teeth. Treatment from a periodontist is necessary to reverse this condition.

I truly cannot recommend this dental office enough. The entire staff is incredibly friendly. I had only visited the office once or twice and by my next visit over a year later they still remembered my name just by looking at me, which I found impressive being that they see many patients. Every visit I have with this office is pleasant. They answer questions thoroughly and patiently. My cleanings are very well done. Best of all, I had a crown lengthening procedure here and it changed my life. For my entire life, I've hated smiling because of the short appearance of my teeth. I actually came to this office in the first place because they offer this procedure and I was curious about it. Despite the price tag, I have absolutely no regrets about going through with crown lengthening. I absolutely love smiling now. Instead of avoiding smiling, laughing, and hiding the way I had for 24 years, now I'm excited to smile every day. Dr. Joung did an incredible job and I'll always be thankful for him and this staff. I love this place!

I have nothing but good things to say about Ridgewood Dental Associates. I was always deathly afraid of going to the dentist from very bad experiences I have had in the past. I would cringe at the thought of making a dental appointment. It was finally time for me to have major dental work done and called RDA for an appointment. Never once was I made to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed that it had been years since I saw a dentist. After sitting down with Dr. Samani & Alyda for a consultation I knew I was in the right place. Dr. Joung met with me to explain the implant surgery he would be performing and put me at ease knowing that I was in good hands with both doctors and staff. Dr. Samani used his expertise to give me back my healthy smile. The doctors and staff are warm and friendly and treat you like family. I would definitely recommend RDA for all your dental needs

Treating Gum Disease

Though our dentists will always emphasize the importance of preventing gum disease through proper daily care and regular exams, our board-certified periodontist Jin Ha Joung can provide you with treatment for active gum disease when necessary. Our solutions include:

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a dental procedure in which all plaque and tartar is removed from areas above and below the gumline. The tooth roots are then smoothed to encourage the gums to reattach to the teeth, reducing periodontal pockets and allowing your teeth to be held firmly in place.

Guided Tissue Regeneration

Guided tissue regeneration is a procedure in which our periodontist makes a flap in the gums and removes all bacteria. He then places a membrane between the gum tissue and bone. Bone tissue regenerates slower than gum tissue, so this membrane gives the bone the space and time it needs to heal. This minor surgery can help those suffering from advanced gum disease.

Our Periodontist Can Also Improve the Aesthetics of Your Smile

Though the field of periodontics is focused on maintaining the health of the gums and jawbone, this treatment can also improve aesthetics. If you have a gummy smile or an uneven gumline, our periodontist serving Ridgewood, NJ, and communities throughout Northeast New Jersey can provide you with gum contouring. This cosmetic periodontal treatment removes excess gum tissue, resulting in a brighter, more symmetrical smile. If you feel your teeth look worn or underdeveloped, we can determine if this treatment is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Periodontics

  • Q. Does periodontal treatment hurt?

    A. No. Depending on your treatment, your periodontist or dentist can numb the area with a local anesthetic before treatment begins to ensure you do not feel any pain during your procedure. We also offer multiple forms of sedation dentistry to help those with fear and anxiety, or patients who simply need an extra level of comfort care during their dental treatments.
  • Q. Can gum disease be prevented?

    A. Poor brushing and flossing is the most common cause of gum disease. In many cases, proper oral hygiene can prevent periodontal disease. Routine dental cleanings and exams are also key to the prevention of gum disease. Smoking can also increase your risk of developing periodontal issues. However, there are some instances in which gum disease is caused by factors such as hormonal changes, medications, genetics, and other factors. Routine exams can allow your dentist to identify the issue before it spreads and causes further damage to your oral health.
  • Q. Can't I just do a better job of brushing and flossing to treat gum disease?

    A. If gum disease is detected in the very earliest stages, it is possible to reverse it with proper brushing and flossing. However, if you are experiencing a more advanced stage of gum disease, it will require special treatment by your dentist or dental hygienist. Scaling and root planing can remove tartar buildup below the gumline. Other treatments may be needed to address periodontal pockets or tissue recession. Once your gum disease is treated, proper brushing and flossing habits, along with regular dental exams and cleanings, can prevent the condition from developing again. It also helps to quit using tobacco and limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks.

I have visited RDA since 2007. I live in Monmouth county and I have driven over 60 miles to receive the professional treatment that RDA has to provide. Dr Joung is the best he holds two degrees he’s a periodontist and prosthodontist as well not many dentists achieve such a feat. The level of professionalism stands out the moment you walk in the office and it extends throughout the entire visit by both the team and the doctor himself. I give it a 5 star. 6 stars if Google would add an extra star.

Ridgewood Dental has been phenomenal while working with me through an extremely complicated dental procedure. During the course of a full upper reconstruction I had a medical issue arise. The team at ridgewood dental worked through it with me and were so compassionate and caring it made me really appreciate their practice. It is one thing to be great at dental work, which they are, but it is much more to show your patients care and concern.
