Periodontists play an important role in maintaining proper dental care, as approximately 75% of Americans have some form of periodontal disease and this is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults.
A Periodontist specialized in disease of the gum, degeneration and other structure surrounding the teeth as well as the placement of dental implants. Extensive training is received in these areas, including three years of additional education beyond dental school.
Several non-surgical methods can be used by the Periodontist to treat the disease. If the disease is more advanced, the periodontist also has special training in many surgical techniques to help restore the teeth. This may include the placement of dental implants as well as performing cosmetic periodontal treatments.
